The Capybara Diet
Capybaras are herbivores which means they eat mostly grasses, plants, roots and tree bark.
They have a large stomachs that helps them digest tough plant materials. An adult capybara can eat between 3% to 4% of its body weight every day, which is approximately six to eight pounds of food!
Interestingly, capybaras also eat their own poop, which is beneficial for them as it allows them to absorb more nutrients from their food.
Their diet can vary slightly depending on the species and their habitat, but generally, both the lesser and greater capybaras feed on similar types of plants found in their respective environments.
If you have a capybara pet they will east enjoy a diet that’s similar to their wild counterparts but with a few extra treats. They munch on:
– Hay: This is a staple in their diet, providing the necessary fiber.
– Fresh grass: Just like they would graze in the wild.
– Vegetables: Leafy greens and other veggies for vitamins and minerals.
– Fruits: A sweet treat, but only in moderation to avoid too much sugar.
– Capybara pellets: These are specially formulated to ensure they get all the nutrients they need.
They should be fed a balanced mix of these foods to keep their diet interesting and nutritionally complete. It’s also important for them to have access to plenty of clean water at all times. In captivity, they’re usually fed twice a day, reflecting their natural eating patterns. And just like in the wild, they need lots of food throughout the day because of their fast metabolisms. So, if you’re caring for a capybara, make sure they have a buffet of these healthy options available!
